X-rays in horses: diagnosis and pre-purchase examinations

X-ray examinations are an indispensable tool in veterinary medicine, particularly for the diagnosis and treatment of horses. We offer high-quality X-ray examinations for horses at our practice. In this article, we will delve deeper into the importance of X-ray examinations in horses and how they are used for the diagnosis and treatment of various conditions.

X-ray examinations allow veterinarians to visualise the inside of a horse's body and identify potential problems or injuries. This is particularly important in diagnosing fractures, joint diseases, arthritis, hoof problems, and other orthopaedic issues. By accurately depicting bone structure, veterinarians can assess the exact location and severity of an injury and recommend appropriate treatment.

Our practice uses state-of-the-art FUJI digital systems for mobile X-ray examinations, to meet the individual needs of horse owners. Our X-ray detector is capable of producing high-resolution images of the bony structures of the limbs, as well as teeth or spinous processes of the spine. The X-ray images can be sent directly as DICOM or PDF format upon request.

For radiological examination of horses as part of pre-purchase examinations, we follow the 2018 guidelines for radiological examination from the Society for Equine Medicine: https://www.bundestieraerztekammer.de/tieraerzte/leitlinien/downloads/171020_GPM-Roentgen-Leitfaden.pdf

Upon request, it is also of course possible to take individual X-rays as part of a pre-purchase examination. Simply speak to us.
