This article offers a comprehensive overview of the Slobber Syndrome, including its causes, symptoms, and treatment options.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What is Slobber Syndrome?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The slobber syndrome is characterised by excessive salivation caused by the fungal toxin <strong>Slaframine<\/strong> This toxin is caused by the fungus <strong>Rhizoctonia leguminicola<\/strong> produced, which primarily targets specific plants such as <strong>Red and white clover<\/strong> as well <strong>Lucerne<\/strong> affects.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"500\" controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pferdepraxis-roedig.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Slobber-Syndrom.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plant disease that leads to this syndrome is called <strong>\u201eBlack spot disease\u201c<\/strong> is indicated. It is recognisable by small, blackish-brown spots on the leaves of the affected plants.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How the toxin works<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After ingestion of the contaminated feed, Slaframine is converted in the liver into an active metabolite. This has similar effects to <strong>Acetylcholine<\/strong>, which triggers the activation of the salivary glands and thus extreme saliva flow. Slaframine concentrations in feed of more than <strong>10 mg\/kg dry matter<\/strong> can cause the typical symptoms in horses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"500\" controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pferdepraxis-roedig.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Slobber-Syndrom_2.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Symptoms of Slobber Syndrome<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The symptoms typically appear within a few hours of consuming food and include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Markedly increased saliva<\/strong>Often several litres per day\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Occasional increased urine output\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Occasional noticeable tear flow\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Diarrhoea and\/or colic<\/strong> (rarely)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In pregnant mares, very rarely <strong>Terminate<\/strong> Appearance\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Diagnose<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The diagnosis of Slobber Syndrome is usually made based on the clinical signs, as routine diagnostics for Slaframine are not currently available in Germany. An attentive vet will consider your horse's symptoms and feed intake to make the correct diagnosis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Treatment<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The treatment of slobber syndrome primarily involves a <strong>Dietary change<\/strong>.
